Royal London Trauma Survivors' Day Cyclethon a Big Success!

Trauma Survivors Day Cyclethon at the Royal London Hospital

Last Wednesday 18th May, 83 riders hopped on static bikes in the Royal London Hospital foyer for a 12 hour cyclethon in honor of international Trauma Survivors Day.  Clinicians gave up their lunch breaks or cycled before they started their shifts or on their way home. Trauma survivor Alison Lyddon got on a bike and cycled for the first time since her devastating cycling accident!  In total, Team Trauma cycled almost 1700 kilometers, close the number tragically killed each year on our roads.

Donations to the AfterTrauma Just Giving page, combined with the cake sales and donations on the day raised £1680 for the Barts Charity appeal that supports research into better treatments for trauma victims and also supports this site. The Just Giving page will still be active until Friday May 27th for people who still want to donate.

It was a brilliant day, showing just how passionately everyone feels about the major trauma centre, and there were smiles a-plenty!

So a massive  THANK YOU to all the clinicians, cake bakers and volunteers who helped out during the day. And also a massive thanks to Barts Charity who came in numbers to make sure the day ran smoothly!!

Trauma Survivors Day at St George’s hospital

St George’s Hospital celebrated Trauma Survivors Day by dedicating their Grand Round to trauma rehabilitation and support.  Clinicians discussed the invaluable role of physiotherapy and allied health specialists, as well as financial and legal support services, to help trauma survivors either return to pre-injury function, or if the patient is left with a permanent disability, to achieve the maximum improvement possible.

Then Grace Havard talked about her recovery journey after a car collision left her with extensive injuries.

Through a mixture of excellent in-hospital rehabilitation, family support and sheer determination, Grace has made a full recovery.  She just ran the London Marathon, something she had never dreamt of before her injury!  If you want to see Grace’s story, you can check out her amazing video here.

Other trauma centres in the UK and in the USA celebrated Trauma Survivors Day with great events and get togethers. To see even more inspiring pictures and messages, have a look at the hashtag #TraumaSurvivorsDay on Twitter!
